Use our facilities

Anyone in the world can access the cleanrooms and laboratories at IMS. Whether you are already a member of the Georgia Tech community or not, there are only a few simple steps to join and get access.

External Users

External users are researchers who have no affiliation with Georgia Tech. This includes researchers from institutions other than Georgia Tech, government labs, and industry. If you are from an academic or government institution, you will pay the same rates as Georgia Tech users. Prospective external users will need to first contact Hang Chen (, who will walk you through the process of becoming a user. Once we have received and processed your information, you will receive further instructions from our staff.

Internal Users

Internal users are researchers who are affiliated with Georgia Tech. To get started, users must first join the appropriate facilities equipment group in the GT Shared User Management System (SUMS) and then complete orientation. Use the instructions below to join an equipment group and sign up for new user orientation. New users should then follow the instructions below to join their principal investigator’s billing group.

Join an Equipment Group

  • Using your GT username and password, log in to
  • Select “Equipment Groups” from the gold menu bar.
  • Search for and select an equipment group:
    • Micro/Nano Fabrication Facility
    • Materials Characterization Facility (MCF)
  • Select “Become A Member.”
  • Select “Training Requirements” from the left-hand menu.
  • Register for and attend one of the scheduled new user orientations.
  • Take and pass the three prerequisite entrance tests upon completion of the orientation.
  • That’s it! You are now a member of an equipment group.

Join Your Principal Investigator’s Billing Group

  • Using your GT username and password, log in to
  • Select “Billing Groups” from the gold menu bar.
  • Search for and select the billing group you intend to join.
  • Select the “Join Billing Group” tab.
  • Select the “Request Entry to BG” button.
  • Wait for approval from your billing group administrator.

New User Orientation

All prospective users of the IMS cleanrooms and labs are required to attend a new user orientation. This training will cover policies and procedures, laboratory safety, and basic processing and fabrication development. After attending an orientation and completing the prerequisite entrance tests, users will be granted access to the IMS facilities and resources.
