Support the Institute for Matter and Systems

Your Contribution Matters

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS). Your support is critical for the Institute's ability to maintain state-of-the-art cleanroom, fabrication, packaging, and characterization facilities; run workforce development programs; and facilitate the next generation of scientists and engineers through a variety of outreach programs.

IMS works to solve societal, technological, and scientific challenges by integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise across disciplines. Your investment will have a direct impact on supporting students, equipment, and our facilities.

A surprising amount of breakthrough research is not fundable via traditional mechanisms. This difficulty can arise because breakthrough ideas can threaten the status of incumbent researchers or are overlooked because they come from an unexpected discipline. Philanthropic funding is essential to fill these gaps and enable IMS researchers to think bigger, go further, and change the world.”
  – Michael Filler, Deputy Director of IMS

Ph.D. Fellowships: Facilitating Transformative Innovation from Matter to Systems

One of the ways that IMS facilitates transformative innovation is by enabling Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers, who are mentored by world-renowned, cross-disciplinary faculty to develop dynamic ideas and the skills necessary to operate and communicate across disciplines. By integrating the knowledge, methods, and expertise from different fields and research areas, the fellowship recipients develop novel frameworks that catalyze materials discovery and innovation.

Our world-class facilities and faculty, as well as our experiential approach to research and education, allow us to train the next generation of researchers to be creative and critical thinkers. Our students have a direct impact on research outcomes because they conduct their own research, often working in teams made up of investigators with distinct backgrounds and at varying stages in their careers. This hands-on learning leads to the creation of new knowledge and applicable solutions to real-world problems. Our faculty lead these teams, collaborating within Georgia Tech and with global partners including other colleges and universities, national labs, corporations, and community organizations.

Fellowships help facilitate recruiting students into our four key areas of research:

  • Information, communications, and microelectronics
  • Technologies for the built environment
  • Human-centric systems
  • Frontiers in research infrastructure such as characterization, modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence

Equipment Donations and Showroom

Georgia Tech is constantly striving to provide the most modern and state-of-the-art technical capabilities to our faculty, students, and other research partners. The world-renowned facilities of IMS are in high demand and available to internal and external users via our SUMS platform. However, maintaining and advancing those facilities requires continual support and modernization.

If you are an equipment vendor and would like to incorporate your tools into our facility to potentially discover new and innovative uses and process flows, our convenient location in midtown Atlanta offers significant advantages to you and prospective tool users.

Named Facilities

Two of the core facilities in IMS are named for the philanthropist Bernie Marcus and visionary president Joseph Pettit. As Georgia Tech and IMS continue to expand, additional naming opportunities may become available to secure your legacy of innovation at Georgia Tech.

Leased Facilities

Pending space availability and other restrictions, dedicated space is available to external research partners for their exclusive use for defined periods of time.
